Many hikers describe the fifth stage as the stage of the circular trail with the most attractive scenery. From green mountain pastures with rushing streams and fields of scree with quiet mountain lakes to giant snow-white glaciers – this route has it all. This stage of the trail also offers you two route options, either via the Niederl or via the Mairspitze.
The trail takes an easterly direction across several streams to the Grünausee, the largest lake in the Stubai Alps. The shore of the lake is an ideal place for a short rest. You then head north-east past further crystal-clear mountain lakes. In good weather, you can climb to the top of the Mairspitze (approx. 3 hours) – the summit offers a wonderful view of vast sections of the Stubai High Trail. The shorter alternative takes you through the Niederl. The descent to the Nürnberger Hut is secured by steel cables and should not be all too difficult.
For this stage of the trail, you could also climb the Gamsspitzl (3,050 m) as an alternative peak. Depending on which route option you take, the hiking time is 3 to 5 hours – keep in mind that until August, a steep snowfield often has to be crossed here.
