Duo Sax & Organ

With Josef Schultner on saxophone and Ines Schüttengruber on organ, the Duo Sax & Organ has been performing since 2006. The repertoire ranges from organ literature from the 16th century to literature for organ and saxophone from the 21st century.

A goal of this formation is to connect music from the 16th to the 21st century through an innovative merging of the two instruments. Organ pieces are contrasted with improvisations featuring tenor, alto, soprano saxophones, and clarinet.

An important component of the concerts is improvisation, whether in the form of free improvisations or as improvisations on a given theme (cantus firmus (fixed melody) of a chorale, Gregorian antiphon (refrain), improvisation on an organ work, introduction to an organ work...). The acoustics and the space sound play a crucial role. Josef Schultner moves through the church space during improvisations to utilize the acoustics even better.

The duo of Josef Schultner and Ines Schüttengruber has performed concerts both domestically and internationally since 2006 (Stift Melk, Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Bad Schönau, Venice, Hungary, Luxembourg, Paris).

Three CDs with live recordings have been released.

Ines Schüttengruber and Josef Schultner have already been heard multiple times in the parish church of St. George in Neustift. Their concerts are among the most impressive and touching that we are allowed to present in the summer of 2025.
