Neustift was first mentioned in a document in 1312, when the sovereign of that time transferred property “in Nüwenstift” to the Stams monastery. However, place and field names indicate an agricultural use already by the Romans. Emperor Maximilian I. gave the first church to the “Toler” (Neustift residents). He probably wanted to avoid the long walk to the church in Telfes, while hunting in the valley. In the 18^th century, Franz de Paula Penz built a giant hall next to it, which since has become the second largest village church in Tyrol and still rises above the overall appearance of Neustift. Today, Neustift, located from 970 to 3 507 m above sea level, being the third largest municipality of Tyrol in terms of land counts around 5 000 inhabitants.
