The Stubai High Trail is a ‘black’ (i.e. difficult) mountain trail that runs exclusively through alpine and high alpine terrain. Some sections are secured with steel cables and supports. The trail is laid out in such a way that it does not touch or cross any glaciers, but especially at the start of the season, steep snow fields are to be expected. Always stay up to date on the current weather conditions and keep them in mind when you plan your hike. Don't forget that the weather in the mountains can turn bad very suddenly. Remember that an overly heavy rucksack can seriously affect your enjoyment of the hike and your sureness of foot, and can therefore become a safety risk.
In order to assess which of the hiking trails and tours are feasible, the mountain trail classification provides an initial overview of the level of difficulty of the hiking trails and tours.
Technical difficulty | Requirements of the hiker | |
---|---|---|
Hiking trail | general accessible walking route wide facility with low gradients/slopes | No mountain experience and mountain equipment necessary |
Red mountain track | moderately difficult, mainly narrow, often steep short, secured walking and climbing passages possible | Alpine experience necessary appropriate physical condition sure-footed minimum mountain equipment |
Black mountain track | difficult, narrow, almost entirely very steep, often exposed long, secured climbing passages | Good alpine experience Good physical condition Absolutely sure-footed and free from giddiness Appropriate mountain equipment |

A successful mountain hike begins with careful planning and a good selection of the necessary equipment. Protection from the rain and cold is essential even in the best weather forecasts, but it is still important to keep the weight of your rucksack as low as possible, as a rucksack that is too heavy can be a safety problem and affect your hiking enjoyment and surefootedness.

All times given refer to pure walking time and are approximate values based on a trained mountaineer in good conditions (dry and snow-free).
Always check the current weather conditions and take them into account when planning your tour. Remember that in the high mountains, sudden weather changes can occur within a short space of time.
Due to the insurance cover and reduced overnight prices at the huts, we recommend membership of an Alpine Club. Membership is possible at the Neustift Alpine Centre and at all huts.
