Thanks to its proximity to the Stubai Glacier, Neustift is the best-known and most visited place of the valley. The area of Neustift extends far to the Unterberg and to the upper mountain valley, deep into the Glacier region, and begins about 4 km away from Fulpmes. Highest point with 3,505 m is the Zuckerhütl that is right on the border to Italy on the main crest of the Stubai Alps.
With regard to surface, the municipality is the second largest in Tyrol, after Sölden, and the third biggest in Austria.
Its districts are called Neustift-Dorf, Scheibe, Kampl, Neder, Milders, Schaller, Krößbach, Gasteig, Volderau, Falbeson, Ranalt, Mutterberg and Oberbergtal.
At the centre of the municipality lies the traditional ski and mountaineering resort of Neustift, characterised by its mighty church. The village spreads on the debris of the Bachertal. There is a wide view from here, best enjoyed from the hills on the left side of the valley. Below down the valley you see the mighty Pfaffengruppe, flanked by the Mair and the Brennerspitze. In the south the lime towers of the Elfer and Zwölferspitze rise from a high bedrock that serve as mighty sun dials to the people of Neustift.
The beautifully formed mountains of the Serleskamm extend on the other side of the valley with a view all the way to the Hochnißl near Schwaz in the Unterinntal. Near Neder the romantic Pinnistal with its wonderful alpine retreats merges with the valley from the south. The well-known Innsbrucker Hütte lies at the Pinnisjoch (2,369 m) amidst a great mountain scenery. In the west, the Habicht (3,277 m), one of the country’s most beautiful mountains, rises mightily.
The summit world is breath-taking. Directly in the village the 11er lifts take hikers, mountaineers, bikers and paragliders up the wonderful mountains.
This is also the starting point for the 120 km Stubaier Höhenweg and the Franz-Senn-Weg that owes its name to the famous “Gletscherpfarrer” Franz Senn. Franz Senn’s grave can be visited at the cemetery in Neustift. Neustift in the rear Stubaital attracts visitors by a variety of educational, nature, and experience hiking trails. Nature lovers can easily ascend to the beautiful areas and flowery regions taking the cable cars.
Neustift is a well-known and often visited winter sports resort. Particularly valued are the Stubai Glacier, the largest Glacier skiing area of Austria, as well as the skiing area at the Elfer with its eight-seat cable car and its many lifts.
