Land of mountains, land of huts and alpine retreats

Huts and alpine retreats shape the alpine scenery just as glaciers and mountain tops do. The hiking and mountaineering tradition in the Stubaital goes back to Minister Franz Senn (1831-1884): He significantly contributed to the establishment of the Austrian Alpine Association and is one the founding fathers of the tourism industry in Tyrol. He came up with the idea to establish trails and refuges to inspire people’s desire for the mountains. An important refuge in the Stubaital today still bear his name.

Whether on a hiking or skiing holiday in Tyrol – a stay on an “Alm” or a hut is simply a must. Many of the alpine dairies still manufacture their own products and offer them on their menus. This way you not only get to see the beauty of the surrounding mountain world, but nature in its pure form is served on your plate, too. Active holidays in Tyrol simply require a cosy rest in one of the traditional guest facilities. To facilitate your ascent, most high-alpine huts (especially along the Stubaier Höhenweg) offer a backpack transport service from the valley or a transfer to the next hut. Please ask for information from the respective hut before you commence your tour!
